ABOUT US

The Wilmington Preschool of Fine Arts has a curriculum designed by a faculty rich in diversity and strengths. The program is designed not only by experienced educators but also by mothers. The day is constantly engaging, inspiring, and creative. Hence, children love to come, hate to leave, and love to learn. WPFA gives a child a foundation for a life of finding joy in learning.

The center itself is a one of a kind facility that a parent needs to tour to fully understand.
In addition to custom built classrooms, there is a library/science room, an art room, a music room, a movement room, and a stage for performances. Each classroom is specially designed to inspire learning and creativity. Gravity walls, reading forts, manipulative tables, crawl through structures, and a learning bus are just a few of the one of kind creations. The center also boast four bounce houses that can be set up to create an inside playground on inclement days - so children always have a playground rain or shine!

Every day there are two academic circle times that teach all subjects through a thematic approach and therefore makes learning fun and engaging. The monthly theme ties phonics, math, letter recognition, shape, and life skills to literature and art. All children also experience art time, music class, and movement instruction on a daily basis. Foriegn language is implemented in an integrated fashion by using new weeky sign language words throughout the normal activities of the day. For our oldest class, the school utilizes the "hand-writing without tears" curriculum to further prepare for kindergarten.

WPFA is set apart from other schools by the amount and calibre of our specialy programs - daily art, movement, music, and literature.......

Our movement program is designed by our owner who as a professional dance teacher brings years of working with young children and an extensive higher education background. She was not only a ballerina but also a civil engineer. The engineering background brings a strong understanding of mathematics and how it is best taught to children. Our owner is also licensed to run a Music Together center. Music Together is an internationally recognized program for early childhood music. This combined experience leads to a stellar physical education, music program, and math studies for all preschoolers in our care.

Our center director has extensive background in a variety of early childhood settings and a formal degree in early childhood education. She is also a mother. She brings not only the academic understanding of what a child needs but the life experience of working in enough different settings to see what works and what does not. Motherhood also gives her an understanding of what parents and children alike need from a school and a director. Foundational to her mission is to serve as an educator to the child and a resource to the parent.

Our music teacher is an acclaimed children's musician who's last cd made it to the upper rounds of the Grammy children's series. Children use insturments in music daily as well as sing songs and play rythym games. Children will be playing simple songs on a recorder and understand the basic concept of reading music by preschool graduation!

Our art lead teacher studied at Appalachian state in addition to many private art institutions. The art curriculum ties weekly art lessons both to the monthly themes and also to famous artist work. Children use the masterpieces of all time to imitate when learning art concepts such as line and shape.  As you will see on your tour, the many murals in the school create a space where art is natural and easy to integrate into all activities.

In addition to early childhood ed, our staff's academic background includes an Art degree, a Nursing degree, a Girl Scouts leader, an English nanny, and many years of motherhood.
The preschool also utilizes multiple academic resources for phonics, mathematics, writing, reading, art, and literature. The program is structured yet always creative. The daily routine teaches children to follow systems and rules. However, within that structure, there is tremendous freedom to explore and create. Learning is fun, engaging, nurturing, and skill building. At all times the children feel loved and appreciated

The ratios are extremely low. Fundamental to our curriculum is the belief in individual attention. Therefore, our program is designed for teachers to be intimately engaged with each child's education.

Ultimately, children enjoy learning at our the Wilmington Preschool of Fine Arts because it is imaginative, fun, engaging, and hands on. Just visit the school during the day to see the joy our students express while learning.
